More Drilling Methods
There are different methods of drilling used to drill wells for oil. They include hollow-stem or solid stem auger and bucket auger. These methods have both pros and cons to their use and it is dependent on what is being drilled through, the depth of the well, and also the diameter of the well that is needed. Some drilling methods reduce the risk of well contamination and some need drilling liquid. In addition to the above factors, the availability of equipment will also determine which drilling method is used. Here are some more drilling methods that are used:
Direct-Mud Rotary Drilling Method
Rapid rotation of the drill with the direct-mud rotary drilling method advances the drill in the hole. With this method the cutting must be removed by pumping drilling fluid through the drill rods that the drill is mounted on. It is pumped up through the annulus between the bore-hole and the drill rods. It is an efficient method of drilling and can drill several hundred feet per day to reach depths of several thousand feet. It is able to drill wells that are over 48 inches wide.
Reverse-Air Rotary Drilling Method
This method of drilling works in a similar manner as the direct-mud rotary drilling method. With the reverse-air rotary drill, instead of water, air is used to remove the cuttings from the hole. The maximum diameter of the hole that a reverse-air drill can make is about 17 inches and it can drill several thousands of feet down. In some types of sediment, the stability is maintained by fitting the drill with a casing driver. There is a risk to drillers from cuttings and gases when this method is used.
Cable Tool Drilling Method
For unstable holes, this method of drilling works best because a steel casing can be used to stabilize the sides of a hole. The type of drilling method lifts and drops a heavy chisel shaped drill bit into the well. This method of drilling is preferred when there is a need for unrestricted depth, diameter, and a variety of geological material. Cable tool drilling works well above and below the water table.
Oil companies have geologists and hydrologists that determine the most efficient and cost effective method of drilling. Some oil companies, like Max Tech Oil, who invest in undervalued oil and gas properties. When the property has wells drilled, it’ll eliminate the costs of drilling a new well.
